DEC’s Vision Approach for Clean Water Plans

DEC is implementing a new approach to addressing the water quality issues in identified lakes, rivers and streams on the Section 303(d) List of Impaired Waters. This new approach is described in a document on the DEC’s website entitled, the Vision Approach to Implement Clean Water Act 303(d) Program and Clean Water Planning (PDF, 832 KB). This document describes New York’s adaptive strategy to prioritize waterbodies for the development of clean water plans based on the state’s identified priority concerns: nutrients, pathogens and public use. Dredging of Cattaraugus Creek

The City of Dunkirk Common Council yesterday (7/21/15) approved a dredging project aimed to improve the Dunkirk recreational harbor.

Dean Marine of Michigan won the contract for the works, the same company that worked on dredging and deepening of the Barcelona Harbor in Westfield last year, reported the BuffaloNews.

The contract requires a cooperative agreement with the Town of Hanover which has contracted with the same company to dredge Cattaraugus Creek’s small boat harbor at Sunset Bay...read more.

Our lakes and waterways are a critical foundation of our environment and economy in Chautauqua County and Western New York. Especially Lake Erie and Chautauqua Lake. They provide us with drinking water, water for use in the agricultural and manufacturing industries, the fish that are sold in restaurants and consumed in our homes and, of course, the many businesses that are based on the tourism associated with our lakes.

Local Waterfront Revitalization Program

New York State's Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) is a locally prepared, land and water use plan and implementation strategy for a community's natural, public, working, or developed waterfront. In partnership with the Department of State, a municipality develops community consensus regarding the future of its waterfront and implements the plan to make the most of its waterfront.
